Research Area
1. In-situ electron microscopy
In-situ electron microscopy is a unique tool to extract physical properties from materials while watching microstructural changes. It is usually carried out inside electron microscope forming similar environment to the operation condition. We develop unique in-situ techniques applicable to materials characterization, development and troubleshooting. External variables we try to provide are gas, light, stress, electricity, and magnetic/electric fields.
2. Interface reaction
Thin layers of heterogeneous structure can expand the functionality of the materials. Property improvements are being pursued by modification of the surface and layers of coating surface. Controlled oxidation of iron, internal oxidation of alloy steel, nitridation, hetero-epitaxial growth, and III-N quantum well structure are being studied.
